Hoboken Division:

Nicht nur Blues, nie nur Rock und schon gar nicht nur Indie-Rock: Die Band aus Metz hat es geschafft, einen eigenen Sound zu kreieren. Hoboken Division spielen mit Mumm, gehen weiter und fliegen über ihre stärksten Einflüsse hinweg, um einen rohen, hypnotischen und authentischen Sound zu liefern. Die Band gehört zu einer Bewegung, die sich auf keine Ressourcen verlassen kann, sondern sich selbst kümmert, um Dinge möglich zu machen. 2011 fanden diese Do-it-yourself-Aktivist*innenen zusammen. um ihre gemeinsame Bewunderung für Labels wie „bomp!“, Sympathy for the record“, „Fat Possum“ und die ihre Liebe zu Bands wie „Burnside“, „The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion“, „Mississippi McDowell“ und „Neu!“ in die Welt zu tragen.

Génn:

Formed on the island of Malta, Brighton-based / Anglo-Maltese outfit ĠENN is: Janelle Borg – guitars (she/her), Sofia Rosa Cooper – drums (she/they), Leona Farrugia – Vocals (she/they), and Leanne Zammit – bass (she/her). 

ĠENN is a self-described sisterhood founded on instinctive trust and an experimental collision of multinational backgrounds, with Maltese, British, Jamaican, and Portuguese roots represented across its four members. 

Their bold geographic move was mirrored by their 2023 debut unum - an album celebrated as a bold journey through experimental rock, post-punk, and Mediterranean folk. Notable press / radio acclaim arrived fromBBC6, KEXP, Pitchfork, The Independent, Loud & Quiet, CLASH, Under the Radar, DIY, The Line of Best Fit, with a collaborative video for single The Sister Of also achieved a UK Music Video Award nomination.

It’s little surprise that this has led to diverse invitations onto an international stage, appearing at renowned showcase festivals such as Eurosonic (NL) and The Great Escape (UK), alongside tours with Sub Pop Noise Rock heavyweights METZ, burgeoning post-punkers Deadletter and global art collective Pussy Riot.

On 30th October, Anglo-Maltese quartet ĠENN release their new single Reverberations via Liminal Collective. Their first new music since their UK charting debut LP unum in 2023. The track ushers in a brand-new chapter for the band, teaming up with Savages / Jehnny Beth producer Johnny Hostile and announcing a set of UK headline dates for February 2026. 

The collaboration began with a mutual sense of respect and admiration, and immediately paid dividends with Hostile deftly accentuating the band’s idiosyncratic sound. A sound that shifts between calcified categories (touching upon alternative rock, post-punk and psychedelia) and has been celebrated for its negotiation of both technology and tradition. Hostile explains his feelings towards to working on the track:

“It’s got that rush I love in music - chaotic, beautiful, and impossible to resist, working on it felt like chasing pure energy, capturing something wild but true.”

Reverberations provides a spectral - almost operatic - performance from vocalist Leona Farrugia, with lyrics glitching within a swirling pool of instrumentation. Beauty and melancholy is dialled up in an equally potent measure, once again outlining ĠENN as an act who care deeply about music’s ability to direct in a cinematic manner.

The single is also accompanied by its own visualiser - directed by Farrugia and filmed on their founding island of Malta. Whether audible or visual, the track consolidates an understanding of their position: their union is a powerful reclamation of the ghostly effects of their post-colonial roots. They do, however, very consciously avoid placing this as a simplistic slogan across the face of their work - these realisations simply echo through the diverse references of their sound, as guitarist Janelle Borg explains:

“In an era where people from migrant backgrounds have their culture and their music appropriated – but then discarded or even targeted – and in a socio-political climate that's far from kind to people who look like us, we're here to embrace what makes us different.” 

“We’re here to share it with the world – and stand on stage and have our voices, our music, our culture and the core of who we are represented without fear.”

Aside from a recent appointment as artist patrons for the Music Venue Trust, the band has just announced a UK headline tour in early 2026, offering the first chance to hear unbridled new material. Additionally, Brighton’s The Old Market commissioned ĠENN to craft and present an immersive audiovisual performance exploring their unique position within colonialism (to be presented in 2026).
