Ora Cogans neues Album „Formless“ findet Schönheit, Absurdität, Humor und unwahrscheinliche Freude in den düstersten Zeiten. Cogans rauchige, psychedelische Herangehensweise an Gothic Country und düsteren Folk verschmilzt mit Post-Punk, Groove, Psych-Rock und traditionellen Balladen. Mit einer einzigartigen Stimme, die mehr Gefühl als Klang ist, sucht Ora Cogan nach neuen Realitäten im Rauch-und-Spiegel-Labyrinth unserer grausamen Gesellschaft.
„Das Schreiben dieses Albums war wie ein Rettungsanker… transformierend und heilend“, erinnert sich Cogan. „Die Neukalibrierung eines inneren Kompasses, der ständig durch den Magnetismus einer gestörten Welt aus dem Gleichgewicht gebracht wurde.“
Formless wurde größtenteils mit der Rhythmusgruppe David Proctor und Finn Smith auf analogem Band im Risque Disque Studio auf Vancouver Island aufgenommen und von Cogan und David Parry von Loving koproduziert. Auf dem Album sind internationale Gastmusiker zu hören, darunter Cormac Mac Diarmada von LANKUM, der bei „Feel Life“ die Streicher spielt, und ein Duett mit Y La Bamba bei „Ways of Losing“.
Cogan wuchs als Tochter einer Fotojournalistin und eines Musikers auf den Inseln der kanadischen Pazifikküste auf und prägte ihren Zugang zur Musik fernab der Großstadtszenen. Ihr Elternhaus diente als professionelles Aufnahmestudio und beherbergte einen ständigen Strom von Künstlern. Cogan nahm als Kind eine Vielzahl von Einflüssen auf, von Ladino und Rumbetico bis hin zu amerikanischem Country-Blues und Außenseiterkunst, die alle in ihren eisigen, kinematischen und doch prickelnd intimen Sound einfließen.
Cogan produziert seit Jahren von der Kritik gefeierte Alben, die ihr Festivalplätze in ganz Europa und Nordamerika, Aufenthalte in Italien und Frankreich sowie Auftritte mit Mazzy Star und Grouper einbrachten. Die experimentierfreudige Künstlerin hat mit Künstlern wie Frazey Ford, Skeena Reece und Mitgliedern von Big Brave zusammengearbeitet.
Formless entstand in den Abgründen von Trauer und pandemischer Isolation. „Ich habe viel Zeit damit verbracht, mit meinem Hund ziellos durch die Wälder zu streifen“, sagt Cogan. Das Ergebnis ist ein Erguss von Grübeleien über unbeholfene Liebe, Schmerz, innere Kämpfe und den Kampf, Wege zu finden, sich gut zu fühlen, wenn alles schlecht läuft.
Cogan und ihre eingespielte Band werden Formless im Jahr 2024 auf Tournee in den USA sowie in der EU und Großbritannien begleiten. Ihre Auftritte sind ein vitales Gegenmittel gegen die dystopische Entfremdung des modernen Lebens und ziehen ein sich überschneidendes Publikum aus Folk, Gothic, Pop-, Experimental- und sogar Noise- und Punk-Fans zusammen wie ein bizarres klangliches und soziales Venn-Diagramm.

“Writing this album was a very much a lifeline… transformative and healing,” Cogan recalled. “Re-calibrating an internal compass constantly thrown off by the magnetism of a deranged world.”
Recorded in mostly off-the-floor takes with rhythm section David Proctor and Finn Smith on analog tape at Vancouver Island’s Risque Disque studio and co-produced by Cogan and Loving’s David Parry, Formless features international guest stars including Cormac Mac Diarmada from LANKUM, who plays strings on “Feel Life,” and a duet with Y La Bamba on “Ways of Losing.”
Raised by a photojournalist and a musician on the islands of Canada’s Pacific coast, Cogan shaped her approach to music far from big-city scenes. Her childhood home played host to a constant stream of artists as it served as a professional recording studio. Cogan absorbed a myriad of influences growing up, from Ladino and Rumbetico to American country blues and outsider art all feeding into her glacial and cinematic yet tinglingly intimate sound.
Cogan has been crafting critically acclaimed records for years, earning her festival slots throughout Europe and North America, residencies in Italy and France, and shows with Mazzy Star and Grouper. Prolific and experimental, she’s collaborated with the likes of Frazey Ford, Skeena Reece and members of Big Brave.
Formless took form in the abyss of grief and pandemic isolation. “I spent a lot of time wandering aimlessly in the woods with my dog,” said Cogan. The result is an outpouring of ruminations on awkward love, pain, internal struggles, and a fight to find ways to feel good when everything goes bad.
Cogan and her close-knit band will support Formless with stateside touring as well as EU and UK dates in 2024. Her performances offer a vital antidote to the dystopian alienation of modern life, drawing overlapping audiences of folk, goth, pop, experimental, and even noise and punk fans together like some bizarre sonic/social Venn diagram.
