Uma Chine

Uma Chine ist das Hauptprojekt Nele De Gessems. Sie hatte Musik studiert und in Bands wie Maya's Moving Castle und Future Old People Are Wizards gespielt. In Uma Chine stehen ihr die Schwestern Rana und Sherien Holail Mohamed mit Gesang zur Seite, sowie Simon Raman (Drums), Nils Vermeulen (Bass) und Koen Quintyn (Synthesizer) - damit hat Nele De Gessem einige der besten MusikerInnen der Jazz- und Popszene Ghents zusammengebracht. Das Debüt-Album erscheint im Februar dieses Jahres. De Standaard kommentierte es mit "Angelo Badalamenti (Twin Peaks) on a diet of electric guitars and ethereal women's voices".

---

Belgian dream pop six-piece Uma Chine craft unusually bewitching music. The new band has two albums under its belt - the debut self-titled (2019) and Changes (2021) - which have been beautifully received by the music press in the Benelux region press and beyond. The most eye-catching endorsement yet has come from Belgium's godfathers of synth music dEUS. dEUS asked Uma Chine to play at their aftershow in Antwerp, which is a pinch yourself moment for any purveyor of futuristic music through analog gear.

Uma Chine being at the forefront of the Belgian alternative scene comes partly thanks to frontwoman and principal composer Nele De Gussem. De Gussem has been in some of the country's great modern bands before -- BRNS, Maya's Moving Castle, Future Old People Are Wizards. But it's in Uma Chine you hear an artist embarking on their most personal work to date, whilst conceding that the idea of the self is perhaps an egoistic social construct, and that truly divine ideas pass through you.

“I believe that the most important ideas come to us, they want to impose themselves on our consciousness. The only thing we can do is listen quietly and examine them without fear, ” says De Gussem, with the air of a Victorian auteur.

With her dream catcher in thoroughly good order, the sound of magical-realism as pop ensues, strikingly so on the new album, Changes. It’s a largely blissed-out listen accented by an embrace of the odd. A case in point is the shifts from shoegaze-y dream pop to tribal drum wig-outs on lead single 'Visits'. Or the era-blending 'The Frog', where dirty synth bass intertwining dazed folk-y fireside vocals. The singers have an eeriness to sound truly like oracles. Meanwhile, 'Changes' offers the unexpected as analog oscillators make way for a cranky burst of lead guitar.

De Gussem comes across, ultimately, like the luckiest composer in the world to have such enigmatic co-singers in her presence in sisters Rana and Sherien Holail Mohamed. Meanwhile, the band musicians Simon Raman (drums - Ivy Falls, Steiger), Nils Vermeulen (bass - Jukwaa) and Gilles Vandecaveye-Pinoy (Steiger, Peenoise) all pull in the same musical direction to make this a perfectionist psychedelia, with everything feeling like it's justified as a texture on a trained musical level, with the puzzles worked out in her dreams.

This blend of articulate classicism with truly tasteful production ideas will see Uma Chine blast far into orbit and remain one of THE bands to know in 21st century music.

Haley Johnsen

---

Haley Johnsen is a Portland, Oregon-born musician with a knack for genre-bending and a hard-earned career path that is uniquely her own. Raised listening to powerhouse singers such as Brandi Carlile, Grace Potter, and Annie Lennox, her greatest inspirations become apparent in her soaring vocals, introspective lyricism, and cross-pollinated style of indie-pop, and bluesy folk rock music. Whether her songs muse on the aches of self-doubt, the joy that can accompany nostalgia, or simply trying to stay afloat in tough times, her bona fide songwriting combined with her performance ability is bound to evoke an emotional response. “I want my music to encourage people to push through their challenges and continue to have hope and belief in themselves and their authenticity,” she says.

Growing up as a competitive gymnast, Haley quickly learned how to be a daredevil and step outside her comfort zone. This influenced her musical journey by prompting the prolific songwriter to take inventive and unexpected risks sonically at an early age.  In the span of about three years, Haley wrote around 200 songs in her parents back shed, with the most memorable songs being added to her debut EP, Through the Blue, which was released in 2015. She followed up with her second EP, When You Lit The Sky, in 2017, along with a handful of singles and national tours. It was through her critically acclaimed 12-track debut album, Golden Days, where she gained much deserved recognition and ignited the interest of Allen Stone who appeared on the album. Later that year, Haley began touring with the power-trio sister-band Joseph and with EDM/Indie pop artist Big Wild, who she currently works with as a bassist and back-up vocalist. During her first Europe tour in January of 2019, Haley was further granted the opportunity to record an acoustic album entitled London Sessions at the Legendary Abbey Road.

Her highly anticipated 2021 single “Goner” was written in a vintage trailer in the midst of having an existential crisis. The songwriter confides, “it came to be about the romanization of nostalgia; the longing for what once was our youth and also the fear of death. It's about my own internal struggle trying to stay present and at peace with who I am now, where I am now, and realize that my childlike self is still very much alive in me. It's a reminder that I don't need to be afraid or insecure with where I am in my life.” Featuring honey-dipped vocals, breezy guitars, and sweeping 70s inspired folk rock soundscapes, “Goner” is a sun-drenched melancholic daydream. The single marks the first off of her upcoming full length that promises to be “ quirky, dramatic, soft, somber, eclectic, and energetic.” Kinda like Haley Johnsen.
