In May 1926, Britain’s miners struck, joined by workers nationwide. By 4 May, 1.5 million were out in Britain’s first general strike, halting industry and newspapers. Radio filled the gap: the BBC broadcast news, live music and George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion.
